About the "Health Hub" / street drug consumption site, Our Ask and About Scona Concerned Citizens...
BACKGROUND
- There is substantial opposition to a Provincially funded “Health Hub” – planned by Boyle Street Community Services to be located at 10119 – 81st Ave in Ritchie/Old Strathcona in Edmonton.
- The hub is to provide support to those with drug addictions, and includes booths for on-site consumption of street drugs which includes opioids, methamphetamine, and fentanyl.
- We ask that the Province not approve funding for Boyle Street’s 81st Avenue "health hub", and also to not approve a license for a Supervised Consumption Site (OPS) at this 81st Ave location.
- In addressing addiction, we ask that the Province consider the negative impact and risks these services will have on other stakeholders - and not permit facilities which will harm or destroy existing, vibrant neighborhoods.
- We believe that in determining a suitable location, the Province must insist on using evaluation criteria and a risk assessment which considers others who are already in the planned neighborhood - including local residents and businesses. ** In choosing the 81st Avenue location, beyond those with drug addictions, Boyle Street did not consider others in the surrounding community.
- Scona Concerned Citizens is a growing group of 100+ members (local residents, employees, property and business owners), supported by over 1,200 people who have now signed a petition asking the Province of Alberta to insist that Boyle Street “Find A Better Location”.
- Our primary issues are with unmitigable risks, including: increased crime, decreased public safety, and the negative impact on neighborhood revitalization that will occur if this site is approved.
- Our concerns are based on what has happened with similar sites elsewhere in Alberta and Canada, and from our own personal experiences. Many recent incidents of crime, vandalism, public indecency, and other acts jeopardizing our safety and our property have occurred since the opening of a similar Mustard Seed facility less than a block away from the planned site.
- People in our area should not have to endure even more.
