Maps, Pictures and Information Below Illustrate Why Boyle Street Needs to Find a Better Location.
Pictures, maps and data below below clearly illustrates that the proposed 81st Ave location for the Boyle Street "health hub" is dangerously close to residents (including children and seniors), businesses and their employees - in a thriving revitalized neighborhood.
Within 500m of the Proposed Consumption site there are
- 3 Daycares – with 220 licenced spaces for children
- 9 Activity Centers - which include recreation and activities for children and families
- Over 2,000 residents in over 1,300 different apartments and condominiums (not including many others in duplex, triplex or 4-plex residential units)
- 4 Seniors housing buildings with 173 units and over 250 seniors…
- Over 400 small businesses employing over 2,000+ people (* a conservative estimate)
Below are images of current and historical overdose heat maps with data for Ritchie / Old Strathcona near the Boyle Street Community Service proposed "health hub". They show that overdose calls went up dramatically after the opening of another agency (Mustard Seed) which brought clients suffering from homeless to the 81st Ave neighborhood.
Next images for 2021 and 2022 are responses after the arrival of Mustard Seed in 2021
The image below provides overdose data for 2022 for the area near currently operating downtown drug consumption / injection sites. They show a much higher number of emergency calls, and a very high concentration around these consumption sites. They also illustrate a much higher need for services than exists near the proposed 81 Ave site. (These sites have been in operation since 2017.)
